Kaden's leukemia story begins on the morning of August 18, 2007. Before this he was a very healthy, energetic, little boy. He was rarely sick, even with a cold. But this day was the beginning of a difficult journey. He got a nosebleed, which wasn't abnormal for him. He had been getting nosebleeds for over a year prior to this. But what wasn't normal was that I had trouble getting it to stop. It restarted two more times within a short amount of time and I realized that something wasn't right.
So I called the doctor and she ordered blood work. That afternoon I got a call from the doctor and she said the bloodwork was showing that his platelets were low. We were to take him the next day for more blood work.
After his nap the following day he began having leg pain. He developed a fever and more blood work showed his platelet count was dropping. The doctor referred him to a pediatric oncologist and after a physical exam and more blood work he was believed to just have a viral infection.
For the next few days he continued to have a fever, pain in his abdomen, vomiting and more difficulty walking from the bone pain. His oncologist was concerned about the results of further blood work and scheduled him for a bone marrow biopsy.
On August 24, just six days after his symptoms began, Kaden had a bone marrow biopsy and was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). He was immediately admitted to the hospital and three days later began his chemotherapy. Within two weeks of treatment he was in remission.
He will continue to receive his chemo until December 2010. He is doing well and is a very active 5 year old.
Kaden's Updates
September 16th, 2008 - Two weeks ago Kaden finished a series of chemo injections (Ara-C) that drops his blood counts very low every time he gets them. With no infection fighting cells he can get sick very easily. He developed a fever and was admitted to the hospital. They determined that he has a pseudomonas infection in his blood and they are treating it with antibiotics. We have been here in the hospital for a week and a half and his counts are still very low. In that amount of time he has had seven platelet transfusions and two blood transfusions. Once his blood counts recover he will be discharged and then he can begin the maintenance phase of his treatment, which means he will go to clinic monthly for chemo rather than weekly.
October 22nd, 2008 - Kaden is now three weeks into his maintenance phase of treatment and he is doing very well. His hair is growing back, he looks good and feels good. He has lots of energy and his appetite is better. We are honored to say that Kaden has been asked to be a Junior Ambassador for our local Relay For Life 2009. We became involved with The American Cancer Society Relay For Life in 2008 just a few months after Kaden was diagnosed with leukemia. It is a lot of fun and a great opportunity to get together with other people who share the same passion for fighting back against cancer. You can
learn more about Relay For Life and our experiences here.
November 13, 2008 - Kaden is so full of energy he is bouncing off the walls. He started preschool last week and loves it. It is so nice for him to be able to go to school and socialize with other children.
